Formerly known as SkyDome, the Rogers Centre is a large sports stadium and event venue in Downtown Toronto. Standing next to the iconic CN Tower, the Rogers Centre has been home to professional sports teams, as well as being one of Toronto's largest music venues. Madonna and Bruce Springsteen are among those that have performed at the stadium in recent years. It is the largest stadium in Toronto.
The capacity of the Rogers Centre varies by sport. Major League Baseball team Toronto Blue Jays play their home fixtures at the centre, with sell-out crowds almost breaking 50,000 spectators. Other sports have a reduced capacity, and the stadium can be configured in various ways for music gigs, dependent on the number of tickets sold. Travelling carnivals and one-off events like Monster Trucks also see tens of thousands entering the Rogers Centre.
The stadium is just a few steps from Union Station in the heart of Toronto. Two subway lines intersect here along with suburban rail services. There's a dedicated terminal outside the Rogers Centre for bus connections to destinations all around the city.
Built in 1989, the Rogers Centre was the first in the world to have a fully retractable motorised roof. Its record attendance didn't come from a performance by U2, or a Buffalo Bills NFL game, but the 68,000 that packed in for WrestleMania X8 in 2002.
