About Amsterdam-West, Amsterdam

At the western side of Vondelpark begins a leafy neighbourhood which is home to a melting pot of cultures. Amsterdam West will delight travellers of all ages, boasting elegant houses sitting side by side with designer furniture shops, lively cafes and outdoor terrace dining. Although the designer shops of Amsterdam Zuid overspill into the area, visitors are more likely to discover quaint markets and eclectic eateries in the "Old West".

The streets close to Overtoom are ideal for an afternoon stroll with the delightful Gothic Revival designed Vondelkerk located nearby. Once utilised as a church during the late 1800s until 1977, it is now used for concerts and as a popular wedding venue. The iconic architecture is incredibly striking and well worth a visit. Shopping is a popular pastime in Amsterdam West. Visitors will be enticed by aromatic herbs and spices of the shops on Kinkerstraat or tempted by the vintage décor on display. There are trendy bars, colourful flower stands, and eclectic street markets to enjoy in this area. Old West is fortunate to be home to several picturesque green areas. Vondelpark is perhaps the most popular, attracting millions of visitors every year. Enjoy a family day out, try rollerblading, cycling or even take in a pop concert while relaxing with a lakeside picnic. Amsterdam West is ideally located to explore the rest of the city. Anne Frank House, Bloemenmarkt and bustling Dam Square are all within 15 to 20 minutes’ walk from the neighbourhood and the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are the same distance via Vondelpark.

Amsterdam West is very easy to get around on foot, as many of the attractions are both in and outside the neighbourhood and within 20 minutes’ reach. Tram and metro services operate to this district from all over the city. Alternatively, renting a bicycle is a fun and stress-free way to travel.

Amsterdam West was once home to the working class and newcomers of the city, and was nicknamed the "Wild West". European pilgrims would pass through the area via the footpath and many decided to settle in the area. The neighbourhood is home to many diverse cultures which makes for a vibrant dining food culture, and with its abundance of creative outlets and proximity to Vondelpark and the city, it comes as no surprise that the area is popular with expat families.
