About Braintree

Located on the banks of the River Brain, Braintree is a historic textile manufacturing hub in Essex. The area has been inhabited since at least the Bronze Age, well before the arrival of the Romans and the Saxons. By the 14th century, Braintree was producing woollen cloth, with its industry flourishing following the arrival of Flemish immigrants in the 17th century.

In the heart of town is the Braintree District Museum, which occupies a beautifully preserved old school building. Learn about the area’s industrial history and the innovations made in metal window design here, as well as the lasting legacy of the locally-born naturalist, John Ray. Don’t miss the Victorian-era classroom and the gift shop stocked with local products.

For a retail fix, head to Braintree Village. This outlet shopping mall on the southeastern outskirts of town is easily accessible from the Braintree Freeport railway station.
