Aphrodite’s Beach is one of the most photographed beaches in Cyprus and lures holidaymakers in with its azure water and spectacular sunsets.
If you want to escape the crowds, try the secluded Lara Beach. Watch for monk seals splashing in the shallows and turtles nesting on the beach. Melanda Beach is another hidden gem, backed by chalky white cliffs and dotted with colourful umbrellas. If you’re feeling restless, try one of the many water sports on offer, including kitesurfing, snorkelling and scuba diving.
While the beaches in Cyprus are gorgeous, venturing inland unlocks beautiful island scenery of a different kind. Think flower-filled meadows, rolling vineyards and lush pine forests. There are picturesque hiking trails to explore, as well as charming villages, hilltop churches and postcard-perfect farms to discover.
Cyprus is awash with history, with the chance to discover ancient Bronze Age tombs, crumbling Byzantine churches and millennia-old Neolithic dwellings. Other highlights include the grand Ottoman architecture in Nicosia and beautifully preserved Roman mosaics at the Pafos Archaeological Site. The Tombs of the Kings UNESCO World Heritage Site is a not-to-be-missed attraction for history buffs.
Cyprus will tantalise your palate with a bounty of Mediterranean cuisine. Meze platters loaded with fried halloumi cheese, hummus, olives, grilled sausages, fish and other delights are a signature Cypriot dish. Save room for the mouth-watering desserts, which feature honey, pistachios, almonds, saffron and rose water.
Getting there
Cyprus is serviced by two major airports, Larnaca International and Paphos International. Most resorts are compact and easy to get around on foot while rental cars are ideal for beach hopping and exploring the island at your own pace. Local buses are also available, or you can charter private coaches and minibuses.
