Enjoy a leisurely walk through the heather-covered meadows in Suedheide Nature Park. A circular trail loops around the Misselhorner Heide Reserve and showcases the unique ecosystem. In addition to birch and spruce trees, endangered German plant species like spoon-leaf sundew thrive alongside the purple heather. Visit in August and September to see the heather in full bloom. Depending on the time of year, you might see moorland sheep and goats grazing in the heathland.

Tour Celle Castle and immerse yourself in the grander of the Guelph dynasty. The castle has medieval origins and features a magnificent Renaissance façade complete with enormous towers. Walk through staterooms filled with gleaming antiques and enjoy a show at the beautifully restored Baroque theatre designed by celebrated Italian architect, Giuseppe Arighini. The castle gardens feature expansive green lawns ideal for picnics.

Dine at local taverns and savour the unique flavours of Lower Saxony. Local specialties include buckwheat pancakes, “heidschnucke” moorland sheep and “pinkel” smoked sausages served with boiled potatoes and kale. Wash down your meal with a glass of black beer, which has been brewed in Lower Saxony since the Middle Ages. Apples are another local specialty and baked into tarts, pies and biscuits, often sweetened with heather honey.
