About Masjid al-Qiblatayn

Also known as the Mosque of the Two Qiblas, Masjid Al-Qiblatain holds a special significance to Muslims in Medina. It’s revered as the spot where the prophet Muhammad received inspiration to move the Qiblah from Jerusalem to Mecca.

The domes of Masjid Al-Qiblatain are magnificent structures, but also harbour symbolism important to the Muslim faith. The main dome is perched atop a drum of clerestory windows that sends light to the mihrab, which is linked to the second “false” dome by a cross vault symbolizing a transition between qiblas. The Dome of the Rock sits within the lower chamber resembling the most ancient extant mihrab of Islam.

Step inside and explore the main prayer hall to marvel at the beautiful minarets and ornate architecture. Learn about how it is considered one of the three oldest still-functioning mosques in the world, with a history dating back to 623 CE.

Getting There

The Masjid Al-Qiblatain lies to the north and west of Medina, spreading along Khalid bin al-Waleed Road. Tours operators offer group visits to religious sites, including the mosque. Taxis and rideshare services are the best options when visiting on your own.
