About Waging am See

Nestled in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, Waging am See is a historic spa town in Traunstein. It lies alongside Upper Bavaria’s warmest lake and has existed since at least the 8th century. In the Middle Ages, it became an important market town and has been a popular leisure destination since the 19th century.

History buffs can visit the Baiuwaren Museum, which details the Germanic tribes who settled in the area following the Romans. It offers a fascinating insight into the development of the Baiuwaren culture, which emerged in the 6th century. The diverse array of grave goods on display includes well-preserved leather items and a gilded brooch.

In the nearby Kurpark is the Baiuvarenhaus, a traditional dwelling that hosts cultural activities and festivals throughout the year. It officially opened in 2008, partially to serve as a workshop for the Baiuwarenmuseum. Also in the Kurpark is a children’s playground and a network of leafy walking trails to explore.

North-east of Waging am See is the Waginger See, a scenic lake that provides a setting for boating and fishing. In the summer months, you can enjoy a swim from one of the sandy beaches, lure carp, bream and trout or explore along the hiking trails that wind through the surrounding foothills. In the winter months, the Waginger See freezes over, making it ideal for ice skating and ice fishing.
