About Lichfield

Lichfield is best known for its magnificent Gothic cathedral and a charming Old Town dotted with historic museums, lush herb gardens and characterful pubs. Lichfield is also a great base for exploring the picturesque Staffordshire countryside.

Things to do

It's easy to spend hours exploring Lichfield's atmospheric Old Town. As you stroll down its cobblestone streets you'll be walking in the footsteps of British greats like Samuel Johnson and Erasmus Darwin. The Old Town is brimming with cosy cafes, colourful sweet shops and traditional country pubs.

Topped by three soaring towers, Lichfield Cathedral is an iconic British landmark. Construction started in the 1200s and took over 150 years to complete. Inside you'll feel humbled by the cavernous vaulted nave and enormous octagonal Chapter House. The cathedral is decorated with over 100 statues of saints, bishops and former kings of England.

Erasmus Darwin House offers an introduction to one of Lichfield's most famous sons. In addition to being the grandfather of Charles Darwin, he was also a core member of the exclusive Lunar Society. You can browse his home to see original poetry and medical notebooks.

Just outside Lichfield’s Old Town is the Wall Roman Site, which features the ruins of an ancient village. It was once a major staging post on the Roman road to Wales, with the soldiers’ inn and public baths still visible almost 2,000 years later.

Getting around

Lichfield is easy to get around on foot, especially within the Old Town. A rental car is the best way to explore the Staffordshire countryside. The Lichfield City train station is an easy walk from the Old Town and offers connections to nearby cities, such as Birmingham.
