About Romsey

Romsey is a historic market town set on the River Test and surrounded by picturesque countryside. Half-timbered houses, flower-filled gardens and a beautiful Norman abbey give the town a picture book feel. Scenic walking and cycling trails make it easy to explore the Test Valley and Hampshire countryside.

Things to do in Romsey

Romsey is built around a spacious square framed by red-brick buildings and half-timbered houses. In the centre is a statue of popular British prime minister Lord Palmerston, who was born Romsey. Venture down the side streets to find cosy cafes and old-fashioned English pubs.

Discover the unique history of the town at the Romsey Heritage and Visitor Centre. The museum occupies several heritage-listed buildings, including a Tudor cottage and a medieval house. Stroll around the kitchen garden filled with herbs and enjoy scones, jam and cream at the tearoom.

Romsey Abbey towers over the town and features a magnificent Norman façade. It was built in 907 AD and is home to many treasures and artefacts, including beautiful medieval reredos painted in the 15th century. Music concerts and choral performances are held throughout the year and show off the abbey’s amazing acoustics.

The Test Way stretches for 70 kilometres along the river and passes directly through Romsey. It’s lined with chocolate-box towns and villages like Stockbridge. Rent a bicycle if you want to cover longer sections of the trail.

The River Test boasts some of the best salmon and trout fishing in Europe. War Memorial Park is one of the best places to cast a line. In the summer, you can enjoy a picnic on the grass and watch concerts in the bandstand.
