Things to do in Xindian District

Escape the city and enjoy a day of rest and relaxation by Bitan Lake. Fed by the Xindian River, the lake is fringed by sandy beaches and a grassy foreshore. Rent a pedal boat and paddle on the lake, then sit down for lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants. Carnival rides and attractions add to the family-friendly atmosphere.

The pedestrianised Bitan Bridge spans across the lake and treats you to beautiful views over the Xindian River. Visit after dark to see the 200-metre-long suspension bridge lit up with colourful lights. Stroll to the local night market for dinner and try “xiaochi” Taiwanese street snacks.

Surrounded by lush ferns and foliage, Yinhe Cave is an easy day trip from Xindian District. The Buddhist temple was carved into the cliffsides in 1914 and is set next to a cascading waterfall. Follow the stone staircase up to the cave and stop to admire tropical flowers on the way. Hemei Mountain Trail is a great option if you don’t want to leave Xindian District. The family-friendly trail winds up a local peak and unlocks sweeping views over the city and Bitan Lake.

The National Human Rights Museum charts the turbulent history of martial law in Taiwan. It occupies a former detention centre and features exhibits on the White Terror period, which spanned from 1947 to 1987. Peering into the tiny prison cells and seeing the iron shackles is a confronting experience.
