With its rugged peak dominating the northern end of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Cradle Mountain is an icon of Tasmania’s Central Highlands. It’s a highlight along the world-famous Overland Track, which winds through the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and can be viewed from the glacial-carved tarn of Dove Lake.
Experience the national park’s ancient rainforests, alpine heaths and sparkling lakes on the multi-day Overland Track, which begins at Weindorfer's Chalet near Cradle Mountain and extends south to Lake St Clair. It leads past stands of endemic King Billy pines and offers up-close encounters with the park’s wombats, echidnas and Tasmanian devils.
Want a more leisurely stroll? Follow the trail around the shores of Dove Lake while enjoying views of Cradle Mountain, which is named after its resemblance to a gold-mining cradle. Alternatively, you can opt for the picturesque Cradle Valley Waterfall Walk or access the jagged summit of the peak on the full-day Cradle Mountain Circuit.
Getting there
Cradle Mountain is 1.5 hours’ drive from Devonport and just over two hours from Launceston Airport. Hobart is just over four hours’ drive south.
