About Leyburn

Located on the edge of Yorkshire Dales National Park, Leyburn is a historic market town in Richmondshire. It’s clustered with atmospheric pubs and tea houses where you can refuel after exploring the gardens, castle ruins and waterfalls in the surrounding region.

Things to do in Leyburn

Forming part of Tupgill Park Estate is the Forbidden Corner, a folly garden that was established in the 1980s by Colin Armstrong. Step through the iconic Facetower to admire the statues and sculptures that dot the grounds, together with water fountains and grottoes. It is designed like a labyrinth, with visitors encouraged to find various plaques hidden throughout the garden.

South of Leyburn are the ruins of Middleham Castle, which was the childhood home of King Richard III. Built in the 12th century by Robert Fitzrandolph, it was designed to defend the road connecting Richmond and Skipton. While exploring the site, take note of the arrow slits built into the stone walls and admire the modern statue of King Richard III designed by Linda Thompson.

On the eastern outskirts of Leyburn is the Harmby Waterfall, which cascades down a tiered rock face into a small pool. It can be accessed along a short walking trail that winds through the atmospheric woods of Harmby Gill. If you drive in the other direction from Leyburn, you’ll arrive at the photogenic Wensley Waterfall. After your visit, you can grab a bite to eat at the Three Horse Shoes pub, which lies just across the stream.

Getting around Leyburn

Leyburn is around a one-hour drive from Middlesbrough and just over an hour from Leeds. Leeds Bradford Airport is an hour away and has flights to destinations across Europe. Trains on the heritage Wensleydale Railway stop at Leyburn railway station and regular buses travel throughout the town.
