Nestled in the picturesque Swan Valley, Whiteman Park is a bushland recreation reserve and conservation area north of Perth. It encompasses hiking trails, transport museums and a narrow-gauge tourist train, and is considered a sacred place in the mythology of the local indigenous peoples.
Wander along one of the shared-use bushwalking and cycling trails while keeping your eyes peeled for birds, with both resident and migratory species recorded here. There are barbecues and picnic shelters dotted throughout the park, as well as numerous children’s playgrounds and a mini water park.
Get up close to native wildlife at the Caversham Wildlife Park or enjoy a ride on the heritage electric trams and the charming Bennett Brook Railway. If you’re interested in the local transportation history, visit the Tractor Museum of Western Australia, Bus Preservation Society or the Western Australian Motor Museum, all of which operate inside the park.
Getting there
Whiteman Park sprawls north of Bennett Springs, which is around 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of Perth. It’s easily accessible on the 955 bus from Bassendean Train Station and Perth Airport is 20 minutes’ drive away.
