About Ostia Antica

A popular day trip for history enthusiasts, Ostia Antica Archaeological Site sits about 30 kilometers outside Rome. You can explore hundreds of well-preserved buildings and artwork dating as far back as 7th century BC, with the site often compared to the likes of Pompeii.

Falling into decay over several centuries, the site houses a collection of ancient theatres, temples, baths and taverns and inns. Take a tour of Ostia Antica and walk down the cobblestone streets to journey back in time to Ancient Rome. There’s even a tavern with a painted menu still in place.

After you’ve browsed the extensive ruins, visit the small museum that contains ancient artwork and artifacts discovered on site. Marvel at the displays of statues depicting gods and emperors in addition to various sarcophagi.

Getting there

Ostia is a 20-minute train ride from the Pyramid station on the Metro B line, stopping at Ostia Antica. Cross the footbridge towards the well-signposted trail to reach the archaeological site. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Leonardo da Vinci International Airport.
