Elwood is a laid-back beach suburb brimming with character and handsome streets lined with historic Edwardian buildings and London Plane trees. You can soak up the sun on Elwood Beach, browse local boutiques or stroll to lively St Kilda.
Things to do
From trendy coffee shops to boutique wine stores, Elwood Village serves as the main retail strip. It's set on Ormond Road and is a great place to soak up Melbourne's flourishing cafe culture. You'll also find stores selling health foods, hand-knitted toys and bohemian clothing.
Head down to Elwood Beach, which is fringed with golden sand and a grassy foreshore great for picnics. On a clear day, you'll find fantastic views of the Melbourne city skyline. Want to embrace the Aussie lifestyle? Pack a ball, bat and wickets to play some beach cricket.
When it comes to water sports, Elwood is an outdoor playground. In the summer, strong sea breezes make it a popular spot for windsurfing and sailing. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are also available to rent from a stand on the beach.
Surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens, Rippon Lea Estate is one of Melbourne's most iconic buildings. You’re welcome to tour the 19th-century Victorian mansion, stroll around the gardens and attend the colourful line-up of music festivals, vintage markets and antique fairs held in the grounds.
Elwood is in the City of Port Phillip, eight kilometres from the Melbourne CBD. You can drive there in 20 minutes or catch public buses or trams in around 30 minutes. Nearby railway stations like Ripponlea or Elsternwick are both within walking distance.
