About Forbes

Set on the banks of the Lachlan River, Forbes is a laid-back country town in the heart of New South Wales. It was originally home to the Wiradjuri people before the arrival of European settlers in 1834 and was named after the first Chief Justice of New South Wales, Sir Francis Forbes.

Things to do in Forbes

Car enthusiasts can visit the McFeeters Motor Museum, which occupies a purpose-built facility on the highway leading out of town. Its collection includes antique horse-drawn coaches and vintage cars, as well as classic and street rod machines. Also on site is a die-cast model shop and a store stocked with automotive-related gifts.

Occupying the dance hall of the 1878-built Osborne Hotel is the Forbes and District Historical Society Museum, which showcases objects related to the settlement and development of the town. In addition to Aboriginal artefacts, there are period furnishings, antique tools and household wares on display. Don’t miss the exhibit dedicated to Ben Hall, a bushranger who has become a local legend.

Snaking its way through the town is Lake Forbes, which is a popular recreational destination for fishing, walking and cycling. In the summer months, you can cool off at the local spray park or try your hand at water skiing at the Lake Forbes Ski Dam. Golfers can enjoy a round on the 18-hole championship course of the Forbes Golf Club, considered one of the best country golf courses in New South Wales.

Getting around Forbes

Forbes is around 40 minutes’ drive from Parkes Airport, which has regular flights to Bathurst and Sydney. By road, the New South Wales capital is five hours away. Local buses travel around Forbes while renting a car will give you greater freedom to explore the area.
