With a scenic position on the banks of the Tweed River, Murwillumbah is a laid-back country town surrounded by sugar cane crops and banana plantations. It sits on the border of Wollumbin National Park, which makes it a great base for exploring the ancient Gondwana Rainforest of Australia.
Things to do
Part of World Heritage-listed Wollumbin National Park, Mt Warning towers over Murwillumbah. The volcanic caldera is surrounded by ancient rainforests that support a rich local ecosystem. Family-friendly Lyrebird Track offers a scenic way to get under the canopy, with the chance to spot whipbirds, noisy pitta and other native wildlife.
In addition to sweeping views over the river, the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre displays some of Australia’s finest works. Don't miss the portrait hall, which celebrates Australians from all walks of life. After touring the centre, you can enjoy a coffee at the Gallery Cafe.
If you're travelling with little ones, visit Tropical Fruit World. Sitting under the iconic Big Avocado, this fruity theme park showcases over 500 varieties of tropical fruit. In addition to tastings, you can also enjoy tractor rides, boat cruises and a family-friendly petting zoo.
The Murwillumbah Farmers Market is held every Wednesday and showcases the finest produce from across the Tweed Valley and Northern Rivers regions. From artisan cheese and organic meat to seasonal fruit and local macadamia nuts, it's a fantastic place to stock up on goodies.
Murwillumbah sits high in New South Wales in the tropical Tweed Shire region. It's 132 kilometres south of Brisbane and 13 kilometres from the Queensland border. The town is easy to explore on foot, but you'll need a car to tour the rest of the Tweed Shire region.
