Kaohsiung City sits on the southwest coast of Taiwan and is the country’s largest port city. The sub-district and surrounding area is home to historical sites, culturally-rich museums and vast green spaces including Shoushan National Park.
Things to do in Gushan District
Culture vultures can enjoy a morning at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, located 25 minutes away. This modern museum showcases an array of paintings and sculptures across its five floors of exhibits.
Looking for a day out with the family? Head to Shoushan Zoo, south of Gushan. This compact city zoo sits to the north of Shoushan Park and houses an array of animals from around the world. Kids can learn about the upkeep of the zoo on a guided talk, before hand-feeding some of the animals.
Outdoor enthusiasts should head to Shoushan National Park for an afternoon of hiking nature trails, exploring the natural forest and clambering through limestone caves. Pack a picnic, as the natural fossil park and garden is a great spot to soak in your surroundings.
The Former British Consulate at Takao is the district’s historical site dating back to 1865. Learn about the Qing dynasty, Taiwan’s history and Britain's involvement in shaping the country. Afterwards, head to the on-site cafe for a light refreshment.
Getting there
Kaohsiung International Airport is under one hour’s drive south of the Gushan District. From here you can take a taxi, bus or catch the MKRT Metro into the sub-district of Gushan. You can also make use of the regular city ferry to get around.
