Where to stay in Evans Head

About Evans Head

Nestled between two national parks, Evans Head is a laid-back fishing town with a wide, sandy beach that is perfect for swimming and surfing. Affectionately known as “Hevans Head” by locals, this old-school coastal playground provides outdoor adventures and holiday relaxation along the tranquil Evans River.

Things to do

Evans Head Beach is perfect for beginner surfers or families looking for a safe swimming environment. Surfers looking for more challenging breaks should head to Shark Bay, which has large waves breaking off the headlands. Along with excellent beach fishing, Evans Head provides ample angling opportunities along the Evans River, as well as canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding.

If you’re hunting the region’s natural spoils, trek up to Razorback Lookout, which provides uninterrupted vistas of the South Pacific Ocean and NSW hinterland. Afterwards, head north to Broadwater National Park for surfing, whale watching and hiking. Alternatively, venture south for freshwater lagoons, river canoeing and beach snorkelling at Bundjalung National Park.

Are you on a family holiday? Take the kids to the Evans Head Aquatic Centre, where they can cool off while playing on an inflatable obstacle course. The Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome Heritage Aviation Museum is perfect for World War II enthusiasts, with its range of military and civilian aircraft and war artefacts.

A true fishing village, Evans Head showcases its fresh catches every day at the Fishermen’s Co-Op, where you can pick up delicious seafood. You can also indulge in authentic Chinese cuisine at Heng Lee Chinese Restaurant or enjoy Italian-style seafood with beach views at Snapper Heads Restaurant.

Getting around

Part of NSW’s Northern Rivers, Evans Head is a short detour off the Legendary Pacific Coast road trip route. The town is also serviced by long-distance buses from Lismore and Ballina and trains between Grafton and Byron Bay. You can easily walk around town, but it’s best to have a car to travel further.
