Deoksugung Palace is one of Seoul’s five grand palaces built during the Joseon dynasty. Known as the “Palace of Virtuous Longevity”, the walled compound consists of several royal halls and elegant courtyards showcasing a unique blend of traditional Korean and Western architecture.
Enter the palace through Daehanmun Gate, crossing over Geumcheon Stream on an ancient stone bridge. Visit the Jeukjodang Hall to see where King Gojong and King Gwanghaegun were throned and explore their royal sleeping quarters at Hamnyeongjeon Hall. Don’t miss Junghwajeon Hall, which houses an elaborate ceremonial throne adorned with a striking pair of golden dragons.
Time your visit to see the Changing of the Royal Guard in front of Daehanmun Gate. Afterward, delve deeper into the culture and history of Korea at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, located within the palace grounds in Seokojean Hall, a beautiful example of neoclassical architecture.
Getting there
Deoksugung Palace is located in Jeong-dong, just a few minutes’ walks from City Hall Station on the Seoul Subway. You can also catch one of the local buses to the palace.
