A sparkling contemporary recreation spot in the heart of downtown Seoul, Cheonggyecheon stretches for almost 11 kilometres on both sides of Cheonggyecheon Stream. Walking paths, fountains and gentle waterfalls dot the space, while 22 symbolic bridges cross the water.
Stop at Narae Bridge to admire the flying-butterfly design. Gwanggyo Bridge interprets the harmonic blending of past and future life in Korea. Keep an eye out for exquisite marble sculptures at the Rhythmic Wall Stream, then make a wish at one of the eight wishing wells bordering Palseokdam Pond, which represent Korea’s eight provinces.
Cheonggye Plaza is the entry point for Cheonggyecheon. You’ll find a model of the entire project and plenty of spots for picnicking. Join a walking tour or spend some time reading about the bridge’s symbolism and concepts of harmony, gathering, unity and peace.
Getting there
Cheonggyecheon lies just off the bustling Sejongno Boulevard and is a two-minute walk from the City Hall and Gwanghwamun metro stations. Buses and taxis are readily available.
