About Lake George

The ethereal Lake George has amazed visitors for centuries. Situated 40 kilometres north-east of Canberra along the M23, the lake is unusual in that it has no outflow to rivers or oceans. It rises with the rains then disappears in times of drought, the compellingly different stages inspiring artists, birdwatchers, and natural historians.

In recent years, Lake George has had more dry times than wet. When the rainwater evaporates it leaves behind a canvas of mudflats and tropical colours, where kangaroos roam, and waterbirds flutter about. Recent years of drought have meant that tropical storms are soon soaked into the soil, so the lake is unlikely to become full for a number of years, to the disappointment of keen fishers. However, rains create vast plains of flourishing grassland that have grazed upon sheep. Grapes are grown on one side of the escarpment and produce a fruity, crispy white wine.

Lake George can be challenging to reach with public transport. It’s located on the highway out of Canberra towards Sydney. A number of hiking trails lead around the escarpments although not all are marked. Many visitors to Canberra head out here to decipher the lake’s phenomenon, with fanciful stories including an urban myth that Lake George has a subterranean connection to a lake in Peru.

Indigenous people called the lake Werriwa, which is understood to translate as “bad water”. This nickname is due to the high salt levels in the water, which made Werriwa almost as saline as the ocean. Lake George’s water level is a solid indication of the water levels across the south-east of Australia. In 1902 is dried out completely, then again during the 1940s and 2002. Rain storms in 2016 filled the lake to its highest level for 20 years.
